I highly recommend it, and I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments if you give it a try. It carries a strong sense of Harry Potter/Hogwarts nostalgia and lore while also being incredibly refreshing in its approach to storytelling, characters, and love. I’m saying this so you don’t open All the Young Dudes in the hopes of 7 mystery adventures that are conveniently tidied up at the end of each school year.Īll of this is to say is that I LOVED this book. While there are some large ongoing narrative arcs throughout the fanfic, this is 100% a character-driven novel (opposed to the Harry Potter novels, which are much more plot-driven).

None of this is for shock value rather, it seems like what teenagers (magical or otherwise) would actually do if they have free reign over a castle for their formative hormonal years.
Unlike the characters in the Harry Potter novels, the boys and girls in All the Young Dudes are quite rowdy–they smoke, they drink, they have sex, etc. The book follows Lupin through all 7 years at Hogwarts and then quite a bit of time after that. It does a good job of reminding you of the impact these characters have on the Hogwarts many of us grew up with.

It’s here that I’d recommend you watch the third Harry Potter movie at some point while reading All the Young Dudes. Lupin ends up in Hogwarts, of course, where he becomes fast friends with the “Marauders” mentioned frequently in the Harry Potter books (Harry’s father, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew). Lupin’s childhood is somewhat parallel to Harry Potter’s (albeit with some different challenges), so there is a sense of familiarity that works well. All the Young Dudes is a fan fiction written by Archive of Our Own (AO3) user MsKingBean89 set in the Harry Potter universe. One of the greatest identity problem hooks of all is the mysterious, potentially amazing identity of dude in All the Young Dudes (by David Bowie.
I don’t know exactly why, but I think it’s some combination of wanting more stories in that world and wanting those stories to be told by someone other than JK Rowling. I’m pretty sure that the only fan fic I’ve read for any major IP is for Harry Potter.
